Welcome
September 30th 2007
Thanks for visiting my
online profile. I run SoftMetaWare,
an international group of experts who provide knowledge
transfer to software development organizations around the globe. In
practical terms this means helping software organizations to
get more done in less time and with less manual effort.
I am passionate about the industrialization of software asset development and have co-authored three books on managing large scale software development and Model Driven Software Development (MDSD). Although I do provide consulting services, the preferred engagement model is based on shared risks and shared rewards. Currently my main focus is on Sofismo AG, the sister company of SoftMetaWare in Europe.
You can connect with my network on a number of online networking platforms, or just get in touch using the form in the right hand column.

Model-Driven
Software Development:
Techniques, Engineering, Management
May 19th 2006
The English edition of our Model Driven Software Development book (Thomas Stahl
/ Markus Völter & Jorn Bettin et al) is now available.
Management
of the Object-Oriented Software Development Process
July 15th 2005
This book, a
highly topical collection of articles (edited by Boris Roussev
&
Liping Liu) from Jorn Bettin et al, is now finally available. From the
preface:
... The book
paints a
holistic picture of the multi-faceted problems in object-oriented
software development. It should be of interest to software developers,
project managers, system analysts, and graduate and upper-level college
students majoring in information systems and computer science who would
like to deepen their knowledge in the field of object-oriented project
management.
...
In [the chapter]
"Managing Complexity with MDSD," Jorn Bettin, director of an
international strategic technology management consultancy, addresses
the question of how to create durable and scalable software
architectures, so that the underlying design intent survives over a
period of many years. Bettin goes beyond object-orientation and
traditional iterative software development to define a set of guiding
principles for component encapsulation and abstraction, and to form the
foundation for a model-driven approach to software development.

Our Model Driven Software
Development book (Thomas Stahl
/ Markus Völter & Jorn Bettin et al) has
hit the bookstores in Germany. The English edition is
still work in progress, but a whole range of MDSD related white papers - in
English - can be
downloaded from the SoftMetaWare web site.
Model Driven Software
Development (MDSD) is all about automation of pattern based tasks in
software design and development. This means
that infrastructure code, subsystems, or in some cases entire
applications can be derived and generated from formal models. The book
covers not only the technological and engineering aspects, but also
provides extensive material on the management aspect of MDSD.
Mir gefällt das
Buch ausserordentlich gut!

The MDA Journal
MDA Straight from the Masters
November 7th 2004
The collection
of articles from the MDA Journal (edited by David Frankel
& John Parodi), by Oliver Sims, Stephen Mellor, David Frankel,
Jorn
Bettin et al, is now available in book format. My contribution to the
book is also available online, including a translation into Chinese.
MDA is one of
the most important technological developments of this decade. David
Frankel has done a singular service by bringing together some of the
best minds to reflect on the role and value of MDA. I am pleased to
recommend The MDA Journal to anyone who wants to gain a comprehensive
overview of the issues involved in using MDA.

Business Process Trends
In these pages
you will find the vital discussion of a young discipline by the
developers, practitioners and theorists who are creating standards and
products for this evolutionary revolution. While this isn’t a
reference manual or even a technology guide, it’s an
important way to quickly understand the issues involved in implementing
an MDA approach. I leave you in the hands of several masters of the
craft. Enjoy your own evolution!

Process Implications of Model Driven
Software Development
September 23rd 2004
In this article in
OBJEKTspektrum (in German) I summarize the key qualitative differences
between model driven software development and traditional iterative
software development. An English translation is also
available.
Introduction to Software Mass Customization
July10th 2004
This short article that I
wrote for Mass
Customization News
(a newsletter on Mass Customization, Personalization and Customer
Integration), is a good starting point for understanding
how the mass customization concept applies to
the development of mass-customized software products.
